Three "Gardening For Dummies" Tips AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Gardening, as much as we would like to believe otherwise, is something that does not come to a person naturally. Like a taste for olives, skating on thin ice and a number of other activities people perform, gardening is something that needs to be acquired; or if you prefer a different term something that needs to be learned. Learning gardening through books and articles is not the way to go; gardening must be learned through experience.

Having said that, it is sometimes important to have a good theoretical grounding in the basic concepts of gardening before launching out into the garden and laying your ecological army down into the ground. Here are three tips that will help you avoid the mistakes that many newbie gardeners make.

1) Make sure that you water using a deep watering method that is infrequent versus a shallow watering method that is frequent. The way nature works is to rain down heavily on plants every week or so on average and therefore this is what plants are used to when it comes to having water. This ultimately means that watering your plants once a week in a very deep way will have a much better effect on them than watering your plants in a shallow manner every day. It will also save you water!

2) Artificial light is not the work of the gardening devil, nor should you consider it such! Many new gardeners are absolutely afraid of using artificial light to grow seedlings indoors before planting them because they are afraid of the potential consequences. What consequences are they talking about? I have no idea myself! The photosynthetic process occurs in the presence of photos; photos are emitted by all forms of light, not just sunlight. Artificial light can be your best friend at times; so embrace it.

3) Follow the instructions given to you when you purchase your plants or seedlings. These instructions detail the proper way to take care of the thing you just bought and until you are more experienced as a gardener, you should play things close to your chest and follow the instructions as closely as possible.

These are the three major pitfalls when it comes to gardening and if you manage to avoid these, you are well on your way to joining the ranks of the excellent gardeners.
